What the payment fees calculator shows
Enter an order amount to see what Shopify Payments, Stripe and PayPal would each take in fees, what you'd receive, and the fee as a percentage of the order, side by side. You can switch on an international card or a currency conversion, and on a Shopify store you can include the extra transaction fee Shopify charges when you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments.
The starting numbers are each provider's standard online card rate for the United States, taken from their official pricing pages on the date shown on this page. Every number can be changed.
Fees vary: check your own rates
Payment fees depend on your country, your plan, the type of card, whether the buyer is abroad, and sometimes on negotiated rates. Shopify Payments, for example, charges less on higher plans, and PayPal charges different rates for its own checkout and for card payments. Treat the defaults as a starting point and enter the rates from your own provider's pricing page or account.
How it's calculated
For each provider, the fee is the order amount multiplied by its percentage (plus the international or currency conversion percentages when switched on, and Shopify's extra percentage for other providers when selected), plus the fixed fee per order. What you receive is the order amount minus the fee. Everything runs in your browser.
Why it matters
On a 20 order, a fixed fee of 30 or 49 cents is a much bigger share than on a 200 order, and an extra percentage for international cards or currency conversion can double the cost of a sale. Knowing your real fee per order helps you set prices, decide on a minimum order value and choose the right provider. Combine it with the profit calculator to see what's left after product, shipping and ad costs.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the default rates come from?
From Shopify's, Stripe's and PayPal's official US pricing pages, checked on the date shown on this page. They're standard online card rates; your own rates may differ.
Why are my fees different?
Fees depend on your country, plan, card type, cross-border payments and any negotiated rates. Replace the defaults with the rates from your own provider's account or pricing page.
What is the Shopify transaction fee for other providers?
When a Shopify store takes payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own percentage on top of that provider's fees. It depends on your Shopify plan; the default here is the Basic plan's rate.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser.
Does it use credits?
No. You need to be signed in to see the results, but the calculator never uses credits.
