What the markup calculator does

This calculator works in three directions. Enter a product's cost and a markup to get the selling price; enter the cost and the margin you want to keep to get the price that delivers it; or enter the cost and a price to see the markup and margin you'd make. You can round prices to .99, .95 or whole numbers, and a small table shows the price at common markups for the same cost.

Markup and margin are not the same

Markup is how much you add on top of the cost, as a percentage of the cost: a product that costs 10 and sells for 25 has a 150% markup. Margin is how much of the selling price you keep, as a percentage of the price: the same product has a 60% margin. A 100% markup is a 50% margin, and a 50% margin needs a 100% markup.

Confusing the two is one of the most common pricing mistakes. Setting a 40% markup when you wanted a 40% margin leaves you with less than 29% of each sale. The calculator always shows both, so you know exactly what you're getting.

How it's calculated

Price from markup is the cost multiplied by one plus the markup. Price from margin is the cost divided by one minus the margin; a margin of 100% or more isn't possible. Markup is the price minus the cost, divided by the cost, and margin is the price minus the cost, divided by the price. Rounding to .99 rounds to the nearest whole number and takes 0.01 off. Everything runs in your browser.

Why it matters

Consistent pricing rules make a catalog easier to manage: decide on a target margin per category, work out the price once, and apply it to every product. For a full picture of what you keep after shipping, ads and payment fees, use the profit calculator alongside this one.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is the profit as a percentage of the cost; margin is the profit as a percentage of the price. A product bought for 10 and sold for 20 has a 100% markup and a 50% margin.

Why can't I enter a 100% margin?

A 100% margin would mean the product costs nothing. Any margin below 100% has a price; the closer to 100%, the higher it gets.

How does .99 rounding work?

The price is rounded to the nearest whole number and 0.01 is taken off, so 24.40 becomes 23.99 and 24.60 becomes 24.99. Markup and margin are shown for the rounded price.

Is this the same as the profit calculator?

No. This one sets prices from a markup or margin. The profit calculator starts from a price and subtracts shipping, ads, fees and other costs to show what you keep.

Does it use credits?

No. You need to be signed in to see the results, but the calculator never uses credits.
